Finding English-language films in Munich used to mean opening a browser tab for every cinema in the city and scanning each programme for the letters OV or OmU. English Cinema Munich does that work for you. What do OV and OmU mean?
German cinema listings use short labels to flag films that are not dubbed into German.
- OV (Originalversion) means the film runs in its original language. For an English-language film, that is English audio, usually without subtitles.
- OmU (Originalversion mit Untertiteln) means the original language with German subtitles. An English-language film shown as OmU is in English, with German subtitles on screen.
You may also come across OmeU, the original version with English subtitles. Whichever label a cinema uses, our films page already marks which screenings are in English, so you do not have to decode each programme yourself.

City centre and the Hauptbahnhof
The Mathäser Filmpalast is a large multiplex a short walk from the main station and one of the busier spots for films in English. Near the Isartor, the CinemaxX München is a modern multiplex on the eastern edge of the Altstadt. At Karlsplatz (Stachus), the Gloria Palast is a historic single-screen premium cinema, while the nearby City Kino on Sonnenstraße leans towards arthouse programming.
Schwabing and Maxvorstadt
North of the centre, near the Nordbad, the Monopol is a small independent arthouse cinema that regularly shows films in their original version. In Schwabing, the Leopold Kinos on Leopoldstraße is a programme cinema with an arthouse slant. In Maxvorstadt, the CINEMA Filmtheater is a single-screen house long known for its original-version programme.
East of the Isar: Au and Haidhausen
Close to the Deutsches Museum in Au, the Museum Lichtspiele is one of Munich's oldest cinemas and a dependable home for original-version films, including its long-running late-night Rocky Horror screenings. Over in Haidhausen, by Rosenheimer Platz, the Rio Filmpalast is a long-standing neighbourhood cinema.
Glockenbachviertel and the south
In the Glockenbachviertel, the Neues Arena is a small independent arthouse cinema. Further south in Solln, Kino Solln is a small neighbourhood cinema showing a mix of mainstream and independent films.
